Serie A: the €1.7bn media company that fell apart

Original reportingSportBusiness: approvalInside World Football: blockInsider Sport

Unanimous approval in November, blocked by seven clubs three months later.

What happened

In November 2020 Serie A's clubs unanimously approved a €1.7bn bid from CVC, Advent and FSI for 10% of a new media company. By February 2021, seven clubs had moved to block it, arguing that it undervalued the league's rights, and the sale did not go ahead.

How it was structured

The proposal would have placed Italian football's media rights in a company with private equity holding a minority stake, the same broad structure LaLiga and Ligue 1 later adopted.

Our review

An approved deal is not a closed deal. Support from a league's members can move quickly, particularly when clubs start to take different views of what their rights are worth.
